How the player works
Press play on any playlist and the player at the bottom takes over. It keeps playing while you click around the site. Use the moon button for the sleep timer (15, 30, 45 or 60 minutes, or after the current song), the loop button to repeat, and shuffle for a random order. Space plays or pauses. Each song has an MP3 button for a free download, and each playlist has an M3U8 file for VLC and other players.
How the chill meter works
Every song has a chill score from 1 to 100. It is worked out from the audio itself: average loudness, beat density, brightness and tempo. The meter on the home page lets you pick any score and plays the songs around it. The guide explains the five levels.
About the music
Purrple Cat is an independent lofi project that has been making instrumental music since 2018, with 500+ songs. This site collects the chillest ones from the records released from 2020 onward. It is not a radio and not a streaming service: it is a free collection to listen to and to use.

What makes a song “chill”?
A chill song has a soft, steady pulse, a gentle volume, warm or rounded tones and plenty of space between the notes. We measure four of those traits (loudness, beat density, brightness and tempo) and give every track a chill score from 1 to 100.
Is this chill music free?
Yes. Every playlist streams free with no sign-up and no ads, and every track has a free MP3 download. The music is by Purrple Cat and licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC BY 4.0).
Are these chill songs instrumental?
Yes, all of them. There are no lyrics, so they are easy to study, work, read and sleep to, and safe to play around kids.
What is the difference between chill, lofi and ambient music?
Chill is the mood: relaxed and unhurried. Lofi is a style with soft drums, tape warmth and jazzy chords. Ambient has no real beat. This site is lofi-flavoured chill: it runs from gently bouncy to almost beatless.
How is the chill score worked out?
Each song’s audio is analysed for average loudness, how dense the beat is, how bright the tone is and its tempo. Quieter, slower, warmer songs with fewer beats score higher. 100 is the stillest song on the site, 1 is the lightest.
Why no famous chill songs by other artists?
This site only has original music by Purrple Cat, so you will not find hit songs here. What you get is chill music with no lyrics that is free to use in videos, streams and shops with credit.
Can I use these chill songs in my videos and livestreams?
Yes, with credit. Use them on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Twitch and other social media, in videos, streams, games, shops and cafés. Add the credit “Music by Purrple Cat”.
Will my videos get Content ID claims?
No. The music is not registered with Content ID, so videos, streams and VODs will not be claimed for it.
